The Skincare Shopping Checklist

A good skincare purchase starts with a clear comparison. This Blooms Beauty checklist helps you look beyond the product name and decide what belongs in your own routine.

Use it when comparing a serum, moisturizer, cleanser or toner, or another skincare item. Product labels and manufacturer directions remain the source for ingredients and how to use a particular formula.

1. Name the step you are shopping for

Write down what you want to add or replace: a cleanser, a leave-on serum, a moisturizer, a mask or daytime sunscreen. A specific shopping purpose makes products easier to compare. Two bottles with similar names may have different formats or intended uses.

Check what you already own before buying another product for the same step. A useful addition fits your habits, storage space and willingness to use it regularly.

2. Compare the full product, not just its headline ingredient

Read the ingredient list, product format, directions and any relevant label cautions. Notice whether the item is rinse-off or leave-on, and whether the manufacturer describes a particular application area. Do not assume products with the same highlighted ingredient are interchangeable.

For a cream, compare its described texture and package format. For a serum, compare the formulation details and directions. For sunscreen, check the protection information and application instructions shown on the product label.

3. Compare price using the same unit

A smaller bottle can cost less at checkout while costing more for the amount you receive. Use milliliters for liquids and grams for products sold by weight, and compare like with like.

Price per 100 mL = item price ÷ bottle volume in mL × 100.

Illustrative comparison — these are calculation examples, not store prices
Example Bottle size Item price Price per 100 mL
Bottle A 50 mL $20 $40
Bottle B 100 mL $28 $28

The calculation compares quantity, not formula quality or suitability. Pack contents, accessories and the amount used per application can also affect value. For multipacks, confirm the number of units and the size of each one before calculating.

4. Check practical details before adding to cart

  • Identity: Confirm the exact product name and selected variant.
  • Quantity: Check bottle size, weight or pack count.
  • Formula: Read ingredients and manufacturer directions.
  • Format: Check whether it is a cream, gel, oil, sheet mask or another format.
  • Use: Confirm where and how the manufacturer directs you to apply it.
  • Availability: Review the current product page rather than relying on an old promotion.
  • Order total: Review any shipping charges and applicable taxes at checkout.

Keep a simple comparison note

For each option, record the product name, size, price per comparable unit, texture or format, and the reason you are considering it. This gives you a short, useful shortlist instead of a collection of nearly identical tabs.
